CEUs at USC: A Pathway for Professional Growth

The University of South Carolina is committed to providing high quality CEU services for university departments, businesses, state and local governments, and national and international associations.

CEUs are recognized as a standard measurement of an individual's continuing education activity and serve as a permanent documentation of their professional and personal development opportunities.

For your convenience, below is a list of frequently asked questions and answers about the CEU application and certification process at USC.

What are CEUs?

The CEU is defined as a measure of participation in an organized continuing education experience under sponsorship by an appropriate authority, with instruction, direction, and evaluation by qualified personnel and is quantified as the number of actual contact hours divided by ten. The Office of Academic Enrichment and Conferences adheres to strict guidelines designed to assure proper documentation and reporting of noncredit special activities on behalf of the University of South Carolina, an institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

What are the benefits of the CEU?

Simply put, CEUs are a means of documenting the professional development activities your organization or department offers. For many career professionals, the CEU is used to justify promotions and to document the training programs in which they participate. Through an application process, there is assurance that a University of South Carolina-approved CEU workshop, conference, or seminar has met institutional and SACS guidelines for providing a well-planned, well-structured workshop for the professional development of its participants.

Who is eligible to apply for the CEU?

University departments, South Carolina state agencies, businesses, or educational institutions that offer well-planned, structured workshops and professional development opportunities are eligible to apply. External agencies, including businesses and professional development organizations, may be eligible to qualify their programs for CEUs if such programs demonstrate compatibility with the mission of the University of South Carolina.

Applications to offer CEUs are based on specific programs, not across the board for an entire organization. In other words, each class, conference, seminar, or training opportunity must be individually approved by AE&C well in advance of the actual program.

Individual persons who wish to enroll in a CEU-approved program do not complete the Application; this form is intended for the organizations that sponsor programs only.

Who are past and current CEU clients?

Click here for a list of agencies, departments, and organizations which have qualified to offer USC CEUs. Note that approval is for specific programs, not every activity conducted .

Does Academic Enrichment and Conferences provide CEU classes, seminars, or workshops?

AE&C serves as the University of South Carolina’s processing and administrative center for internal departments and external organizations interested in providing CEUs for a conference or workshop. Additionally, we can help plan or schedule your professional development activity for contracted fees. AE&C no longer offers CEU classes, seminars, or workshops of its own.

What are the application fees?

Businesses/Corporations:  $20 per application
Government agencies: $15 per application
Non-Profits (with applicable federal ID): $10 per application
USC Departments: no fee

What is the application and issuing process?

Step 1

Upon request, AEC provides blank CEU Program Application Form to agency, or forms may be downloaded from http://saeu.sc.edu/ceu.

Step 2

Agency prepares and submits Application Form(s) to AEC a minimum of 30 business days before the Begin Date of the instructional program. Each application should be accompanied by the appropriate Application fee.

Agency guarantees a minimum number of participants per instructional program; the absolute minimum is 10 people (may be adjusted in extraordinary circumstances with approval of Non-Credit Programs Manager), and agrees to pay AEC an $8.00 CEU Processing Fee per person guaranteed or attending, whichever is greater.

Step 3

AEC reviews the CEU Program Application, and provides the agency a Notification of Approval or Notification of Denial within 15 business days after receipt. AEC provides agency sample electronic documents (PDF) of the Program Evaluation Form, Verification of Attendance Form, and Participant Master Roster, and CEU Balance Payment Form.

Step 4

Upon approval, AEC establishes a course code and database for the CEU program, and publishes listing of the program in/on AEC materials, websites, etc.

Step 5

Agency conducts registration, instruction, and evaluation in accordance with the approved CEU Program Application Form. Agency is responsible for all aspects of the instructional program, including scheduling appropriate facilities, providing accommodations for persons with disabilities, etc. Under special prior agreements, AEC may be contracted to provide support services including but not limited to registration, meeting space rental, food/beverage service, and promotional assistance.

Step 6

Within 5 business days after the program End Date, agency provides AEC final payment of the $8.00 CEU Processing Fee per participant plus either (a) a Participant Master Roster listing all required information for all participants or (b) an individual Permanent Record Form for each participant.

Note: all forms and payment must be submitted in one complete package.

Step 7

Within 10 business days of receipt of the final payment and the Participant Roster/Permanent Record forms, AEC mails CEU documents to successful participants.

Step 8 If agency elects to offer the same exact instructional program in the future, an updated CEU Program Approval Form and Application Fee must be submitted at least 15 business days prior to offering the program.

Payment and forms should be mailed to the following address:
