Carolina Master Scholars
This summer, outstanding students like you are discovering the power to amaze. Challenge yourself like never before with the Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series.
Learn from top University of South Carolina faculty and research professors as you explore a marine field laboratory,author an anthology, or build your own robot. These adventures will maximize your learning experience by enriching you physically, mentally, and socially. Submit your application by April 18, 2008, to qualify for the early-bird rate.
You must be academically talented to be eligible for enrollment. A limited number

Graders for Summer 2008
Carolina Camp This optional, two-day experience goes beyond regular University orientation. Students earn about campus resources, identify opportunities for leadership, meet Carolina officials, socialize with peers, and focus on career development. Participants must be accepted as freshmen to begin studies at South Carolina in fall 2008.

Carolina Journalism Institute
This intensive five-day regional workshop helps middle- and high-school students and teachers sharpen their skills in both print and electronic publications and productions. Participants learn and practice skills in interviewing, writing, editing, design, advertising, and leadership and attend group sessions and individual classes. Topics include advertising/business, broadcasting, desktop publishing, feature and opinion writing,
journalistic writing, literary magazine, publication design, photojournalism, and yearbook coverage, captions, and visuals. The early-bird registration deadline is April 25. Teachers and students may attend individually or as a group.

Carolina Summer Music Conservatory—Strings, Winds, Percussion, Voice, or Jazz The conservatory is designed for advanced high school string students who wish to participate in an intensive weeklong program to improve their individual performance skills. Conservatory activities include master classes with Carolina faculty and other professional musicians, chamber music coaching, and private lessons. Students will also
select from a variety of electives, including music history, music theory, how to prepare for and win an audition, and jazz improvisation. There will also be opportunities to rehearse and perform solo works with professional accompanists and attend concerts and recitals given by conservatory faculty members.

Culinary Camp at Carolina
Got an appetite for cookery? Journey into the world of culinary arts and master some of the skills required of a professional chef: knife skills, safety, sanitation, culinary terminology, and dining-room etiquette. Work with a trained professional chef instructor and learn how to prepare dishes from start to finish, how to set a formal dining room, and how to properly serve a meal.

Lego Ocean Odyssey Camp
Take a fascinating look at robots and spend the week learning teamwork skills as you build and program your Lego robot to perform assigned tasks. Engineer, design, and develop a multipleuse robot. While on campus, you’ll tour the College of Engineering and Computing. Invite your parents to the competition on Friday. Have fun and make lots of new friends.

Partners for Minorities in Engineering and Computer Sciences
This partnership between educators and businesses provides gifted minority students with
cultural and academic activities and role models in engineering and computer science. Through a series of technical workshops, students are exposed to the sciences, which helps enhance their academic skills. Rising high-school freshmen spend four days and three nights on the University of South Carolina campus, and returning students (grades 10th–12th) spend six days and five nights on campus. College of Engineering and Computing personnel assist with the workshops.

Pre-Medical Academic and Career Exploration Series (PACES) First-year students can explore careers in medicine and gain skills to become successful pre-medical students through this highly concentrated program. Academic, career, and interpersonal support services help participants become competitive applicants to medical, dental, optometry, or veterinary school. Ideal applicants are highly
motivated and academically focused. Students who are educationally or financially disadvantaged are encouraged to apply. Partial scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis for Pell
Grant recipients.

Princess Dance Program
This program provides a wonderful opportunity for children to explore and enjoy dance. The curriculum includes classical ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance, as well as special classes in acting, makeup, and musical theatre. Previous dance training is appropriate for this program, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday and can be selected on a weekly basis.

SAT/ACT Summer Institute
University Test Prep Services provides intense preparation for high stakes undergraduate admissions exams. The program extends beyond the initial 20 hours of on-campus classroom instruction. New for 2008, the institute offers an additional six hours of interactive online learning after the summer session ends and before the participant’s test
date. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and lunch is included.

South Carolina Summer Dance Conservatory The S.C. Summer Dance Conservatory, now in its 21st year, attracts students from across the globe for studies with world-renowned dance faculty. Students may choose from Ballet Intensive, Contemporary Intensive, and Jazz Intensive. Classes are offered daily in ballet, pointe, variations, pas de deux, jazz, contemporary, musical theatre, and tap. The summer conservatory culminates with a public performance at the Koger Center.

University Summer Music Camps
Carolina Bands have sponsored summer music camps for three decades. Students attend from across the country and can choose from Symphonic Band Camp, Symphonic Percussion Camp, Drum Major Camp, or Marching Percussion Camp. While housed on the Carolina campus, students participate in ensemble rehearsals, master classes, private lessons, and special sessions. Guest conductors and teachers make this camp a musically rewarding experience for all performers.

Wachovia Scholars Business at Moore School
Wachovia Bank sponsors and the Moore School of Business hosts this unique program, which annually brings 30 high-achieving students from traditionally underrepresented groups to campus for one week and exposes them to the myriad career opportunities available in business. Topics include how a business operates and how executives make business decisions. Participants interact with Carolina alumni, business executives,
and employees of Wachovia Bank while living in a residence hall and previewing college life.

Young Artists Workshop
This enrichment program provides comprehensive art education experiences for producing, evaluating, and appreciating art. Lessons are theme based and taught in a sequential format. Each class focuses on a different art form: photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, bookmaking, computer graphics, and sculpture.

College Summit Forty students from across South Carolina engage in a series of intensive workshops to put themselves “10 steps ahead” in the college application process. Participants meet with college counselors, compose personal statements, draft college applications, and learn about financial aid. They also explore obstacles that could prevent them from enrolling in college.

Southeastern Piano Festival Aspiring pianists in grades 8 through 12 receive daily private lessons with University of South Carolina School of Music piano faculty, attend evening concerts performed by internationally renowned concert pianists, participate in master classes with guest artists, and perform in a professional concert setting. The festival culminates with the Arthur
Fraser International Concerto Competitions, whose top three winners will perform with the South Carolina Philharmonic in the following season. Guest artists for 2008 include Russian virtuoso Olga Kern, master teachers Douglas Humpherys and Paul Pollei, and rising young piano stars Hong Xu and Eric Zuber.

Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) This program encourages bright, academically talented students to pursue careers in science, mathematics, engineering, or technology. Outstanding rising high-school seniors
from the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) and schools throughout South Carolina conduct original research under the supervision of Carolina scientists and are registered for a three-credit college research internship course. Upon conclusion of the research, participants will present a poster at the capstone event. They will also submit a formal abstract and present their work at the annual GSSM Research
Colloquium. The abstracts are published in the GSSM Abstract Book and can be submitted to the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science for competition.
